GOING TO THE OTHER SIDE

By Sandi Mason

I am not a mineral collector, but my sister, Stephanie, believes that I could be "turned" and "go to the other side!" at any time. My knowledge
is limited, but my appreciation is not. A beautiful mineral displayed artfully, and showecased in light, is truly a site to behold.

My exposure to the mineral world islimited to once, or, if I'm luckytwice a year, when I become "staff" at the Stonetrust booth. Six years ago
I was initiated into this unique area of interest at the huge mineral show held a the Tucson Convention Center. It was quite amazing to see that
huge venue filled with dealers and collectors. Collectors who come in ALL ages I might add. How fun it is to see the little ones who are just
starting out; some actually come prepared with "wish lists." The more seasoned collectors are also a delight, sharing their knowledge and stories
of discovery! Of course there are also plenty of folks, like me, who are fascinated by the beauty of certain specimens and just know that they
"like them"!

I will say, I've learned a few "basic" things along the way..... be careful wrapping Okenite or you may crush some of the gazillian tiny
crystals that give it that soft cottenball look that people love to touch! If you buy orpiment, it keep away from pets and small children.
Don't wash your halite specimen! Adamite fluoresces and yes, pyrite really is found in that "cube form". If you're thinking that my assessment
of my knowledge level was accurate, I will forego telling you "I told you so!" But I have come a long way from the 1st Tuscon show where I
took the liberty of renaming aragonite from Aruba, "arubacite", but that's a whole other story.

Let me just say that when you stop by the Stonetrust booth in Tuscon, you will be welcomed with smiles and conversation. If it's more
detailed and scientific information you seek, Stephanie and Robert are always willing to assist you. If you are "just looking" and want
to share your awe of all the wonderful color and variety in the specimens, I'm right there with you, you're in good company. But be
careful, you could be "turned"!
